Interview with Sampson

Conducted by Xander Drake.

Well before I give the questions I agree you guys did a wonderful job with events. You took time to plan, giving up real life hours for a single RPing hour.

Q. How did you get involved with TEN?

A. A group of us from NeverWinter Nights joined DSO together. Being a staff person in NWN naturally lead me to a position at TEN as a Guide, then I was asked to specifically work in DSO some months later. (I was GuideFrost, no relation to Seer Frost from DSO.)

Q. How did you come about working DSO?

A. See above

Q. What are your feelings of the game in the time you were there?

A. It was a great game, poorly coded for multiplayer. (See the lengthy article linked to on the message board for details.) At first the game was fun, exciting (I was not staff at this time). People were scared to go to Alturak because some of ..uh.. (not me! no never!) evil types would cloud or fireball the docks killing, or harassing players *grin*

When I joined the staff, I noticed things being changed by a few which didn't turn out that well. However, I have to note that their intentions and desire were admirable. Long, thankless hours of development went into those changes, and they honestly had good intentions. I can remember working on TAH scripting for (seemingly) months, with Kayn, Boro and Craz (character names only to have it shot down and never implemented. That caused quite a few problems for us, Craz and Boro left. I would also have to say some of the staff had "the ear" of Jon (Vorpalex) and pretty much got their way, which caused lots of inner-turmoil. Some of the staff were plain b###hes or pricks (they know who they were

Things change, and we roll with the punches. I myself began a character named Cap'n Quen. I had a lot of fun with him, really. Whenever I had free time I'd log on and make up quests on the fly. Kayn began the Ianto series of events, ran on Wed? nights, (due to the decision by others to segment event nights) and Poopsie was born. I had so much fun playing that character One thing we noticed, some events were extremely closed-off to only a certain group of players. I won't mention names, but some of us felt this was horribly wrong, but when we said anything about it, the favorites got their way (shrugs). Ah well. We tried our best. I have to say Kayn was the most devoted event host I'd ever met. People have no idea how much work he put into events every week, even when the game was practically a dead fish. He really deserved much more respect and credit than he received, that's for sure.

Did I even answer this question? I've rambled-on so much I forgot

Q. Boxers or briefs?

A. Briefs ;p Tight ones too..

Q. What is it like behind the scenes? What is the software to run the game like? Could a child do it?

A. Behind the scenes was a two-edged sword. Some nights great, other nights you were ashamed to be called a staffer.

The software? Ask Jon about that one, I can say it requires a Macintosh to edit the Global functions though. Jon was given a Mac, I believe (someone correct me here if I'm wrong) to work on new versions of the game. And no, I doubt a child could do it Unless you're a programmer (and know the old stuff) don't even bother. Of course you could always get a build of the game and just start it up on a server, not making any changes

Q. What was your favorite event(s)?

A. Probably spontaneous Cap'n Quen events. I was free to do as I wished, and (I think anyway) have an imaginative mind and came up with some fairly good stuff *chuckles*

Q. What do you think of D00ds?

A. I despise them with a passion. But then again, I'm old school pencil and paper type

Q.You in anyway involved with SSI, TSR, or any right holder exept TEN/Pogo?

A. Nope. Just talked to Rich numerous times, that's about all the contact I've had with SSI.

Q. Do you believe that we can bring back DSO?

A. Nope. Too many legalities.

Thank you for doing this quiz. When I asked if a child could run the software I meant that could a simple ol' veteren player easily run the game, not to imply we had people running it that were bad.

Thank you,
Admiral Xander Drake of the ALA
